Creating Product Images for Amazon : Why Your Photos Need to Tell a Story

Over the years of working in eCommerce, I’ve learned one crucial lesson: your images can make or break your product’s success. On platforms like Amazon, customers can’t physically touch or see the product in person, so your images need to do more than just showcase your product—they need to tell a story. Remember, we’re not just selling a product, we’re selling a feeling, a solution, an experience.

The Importance of Storytelling Through Images

When someone scrolls through Amazon, they’re bombarded with products that often look similar. So, how do you make yours stand out? The answer lies in visual storytelling. Customers are much more likely to connect with a product that they can picture themselves using. This means your product images need to do more than just show the item; they need to highlight its benefits and evoke emotion.

For example, when we were preparing to launch our hooded baby towels, I knew that simply showing the towel wasn’t enough. I wanted parents to see our towels in use, to imagine wrapping their little ones in the softness, to feel the comfort and care that we put into every detail of the product. That’s the kind of connection that great product images can create.

The Photoshoot: Behind the Scenes

So, with this goal in mind, we arranged a photoshoot with two babies (one of whom was our own daughter, Gabriela) to bring our hooded baby towels to life. The plan was simple—capture sweet, candid moments of babies wrapped in our towels, showing off the product’s softness, size, and practicality.

However, like many plans involving babies, things didn’t go quite as smoothly as we’d hoped! Gabriela, our little inspiration for the product, was not too happy about the whole photoshoot experience. She cried her way through most of it, so unfortunately, we didn’t get any usable photos of her. It was a tough but funny reminder that working with babies is never easy!

Thankfully, the other two babies were a little more cooperative, and after plenty of patience, we managed to get some great shots. But make no mistake—it was hard work. Coordinating with babies, trying to get them to smile, and making sure the towels looked perfect at the same time was no small task. There were moments of chaos, and we were definitely exhausted by the end of it, but the effort paid off.

The Results: Telling a Story Through Images

In the end, we captured exactly what we set out to create: images that tell the story of our hooded baby towels. From the softness of the fabric to the comfort and warmth it provides, the photos allow potential buyers to connect with the product on an emotional level. They can visualize wrapping their own baby in the towel, which is exactly what we wanted to achieve.

These images go beyond simply showing the product—they create a narrative of care, love, and quality, which is at the heart of what we’re offering with our brand.

Why Good Photos Matter

The importance of high-quality product images cannot be overstated. They are one of the biggest factors in driving conversions on platforms like Amazon. Customers are much more likely to purchase when they can clearly see:

  1. How the product is used.

  2. What the product looks like in real-life scenarios.

  3. The benefits of the product—in our case, the softness and functionality of our baby towels.

So, to anyone selling on Amazon or any eCommerce platform, my biggest advice is this: invest in your product images. Don’t just take simple product shots—think about how to visually tell a story. Show your product in action, highlight its key features, and create an emotional connection with potential buyers.

The Hard Work Pays Off

While the photoshoot was a challenge—especially with crying babies and trying to get the perfect shots—at the end of the day, it was worth it. We now have a collection of images that represent the essence of our hooded baby towels and the story we want to tell.

Remember, you’re not just selling a product. You’re selling the experience, the quality, and the story behind it. And your images are the key to making that connection with your customers.

Stay tuned for more updates as we get closer to launching our hooded baby towels on Amazon!
